Custom officials seize smuggled gold worth Rs 1.78 cr
Air customs officials today seized smuggled gold weighing about 6 kgs worth Rs 1.78 crore from two air passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
The officials also seized an abandoned package of an air passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia flight.
Customs sources said they seized 424 gms of gold worth Rs 13 lakh from an air passenger Mohammed Hanifa (42) of Thiruvadanai in Ramanthapuam district of Tamil Nadu, who, was arrived here by Malindo airlines from Kuala Lumpur.
He concealed the gold in the handle of his suit case, which was, seized by the customs officials when they subjected his package for re-checking.
They also seized 1.5 kg of gold worth Rs 45 lakh concealed inside the compressor of a spilt air-conditioned unit brought by an air passenger Sahul Hameed (32) of Tiruchirapalli, who, was arrived from Singapore by Air India express. The sources said, they also seized 4 kgs of gold worth Rs 1.20 crore from an abandoned split air conditioned unit package might brought by an another air passenger,who, was also arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia flight. The Customs officials have detained both Mohammed Hanifa and Sahul Hameed for further interrogation, the sources added.
