An Army major was killed and a soldier was injured, as fierce encounter was going on at Shopian in South Kashmir, where a group of militants were trapped inside a house since this evening.

However, official sources said two of the three militants holed up in a house were killed.

A defence ministry spokesperson Lt Colonel N N Joshi said tonight that a search party of 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was attacked by militants at village Karewa Manloo this afternoon.

Troops also retaliated ensuing a fierce encounter, he said.

The injured soldier and the Major were rushed to hospital where Major was declared dead.

Reinforcement was rushed to the area from nearby camps, he said adding the entire area has been sealed to foil any militant attempt to escape.

Due to darkness in the area, the operation was stopped and will be resumed tomorrow.

The exact number of militants trapped inside the house was not known, he said, adding there could be two to three militants.

We cannot confirm how many militants were, so far, killed as firing was going on from inside the house, he said, adding the number will be known only tomorrow when all the trapped militants are killed.
