Yashwant urges Pak PM to order probe into attack on journalist
Senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister in the NDA Government Yashwant Sinha today urged Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to order a 'fair and impartial probe' into the recent attack on Pakistan newscaster Hamid Mir.
Raising the issue of attack on Mr Mir he said, "Freedom loving people in India and the world were deeply concerned about the attack and subsequent events. Mr Mir, a known personality in the sub-continent had alleged that he was under threat from 'state and non-state actors and elements in the ISI."
After the complaint was made, instead of bringing the guilty to book, the television channel which employed Mr Mir was being targeted by the ISI and the Pakistan's Defence Ministry. "This is highly vindictive and retrograde step", Mr Sinha, also an MP in the outgoing Lok Sabha wrote in his letter to the Pakistan PM.
He said," people in India respected media in Pakistan and the judiciary in in establishing democracy. It will be extremely unfortunate if any harm comes to Mr Hamid Mir or the TV network under your watch", Mr Sinha wrote saying that the Pakistan PM would order a fair and impartial inquiry.
Mr Mir, a popular journalist, was shot and wounded last Saturday in Karachi.
