Chennai to Host World Bridge Championship in Sep-Oct 2015
The World Bridge Federation (WBF) has chosen Chennai city to host the World Bridge Championship in 2015.
Disclosing this Tuesday, Bridge Federation of India (BFI) president, NR Kirubakara Moorthy, informed that this would be the first time the biggest event of the mind game would be in the country.
He said the WBF council in Dallas, USA, on March 22 it was unanimously decided to award the event to Chennai. The prestigious event will be held during September 26 to October 10 at Chennai's ITC Grand Chola hotel.
Mr Moorthy said over 800 participants from some 30 countries, including host India, are expected to vie for the top honours in the 15-day competition
'Hosting the event in India will further promote the game within India, especially, among the youth with the best players in the world competing for the championship, Indian bridge players and enthusiasts have a wonderful opportunities to witness the games of high quality,' Mr Moorthy said.
'It is wonderful opportunity to show case india and our culture to such a large and varied global audience,' Mr Moorthy said.
The world event is also expected to provide a tremendous boost to the tourism industries with a lot of spending on shopping, food and travel from the visitors, Mr Moorthy hoped.
The BFI was working to ensure that the tournament, first of its kind in India, is held in a befitting manner. He said a team is being put to address various aspects of the tournament to make it a grand success.
Mr Moorthy hoped that the governments at various level like in the past would provide necessary help for promotion of sports, especially for a mind game like Bridge.
