Prohibitory orders across Tamil Nadu for polls
In an unprecedented move, the Election Commission today ordered promulgation of Prohibitory Orders across Tamil Nadu for the April 24 Lok Sabha Polls.
The Prohibitory orders would be in force from 1800 hrs this evening till 0600 hrs on the morning of the polling day.
This was for the first time in State's electoral history, Prohibitory Orders under Sec 144 of CrPc have been promulgated across the state.
Talking to reporters here today, chief elector officer Praveen Kumar said the EC has directed all the District Collectors to promulgate orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code banning campaign by political parties and any assembly of more than five persons.
"The campaigning ends at 1800 hrs today. We have asked all the District Collectors and Commissioners of Police to promulgate Section 144 throughout the State, prohibiting campaign by political parties", he added.
The EC has also ordered dry days for three days from today.
"In view of the elections, all the liquor shops will be closed for three days from April 22 to the midnight of April 24, the polling day", the EC said.
This was also for the first time that the liquor shops would be closed for three successive days on the trot.
