The forest officials arrested three persons for allegedly hunting a year-old spotted female deer and cooking and consuming the same at reserve forest area of suburb Thachagkurichi, near here, today.

Forest department sources said, acting on a tip off they went to the spot and arrested V Gurunathan (70) of Kalpalayam Village, M Selvaraj (25) and P Durairaj of Konalai Village.

The trio erected electrical fencing by drawing power illegally from the overhead power line along with a Nari Uthu water pond in which the deer came for water and got electrocuted.

The trio then cooked the deer and consumed it before burying the meat and buried the remains in land belonging to Gurunathan.

The forest officials registered cases against under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and they were produced before the Judicial Magistrate at Lalgudi who remanded them to judicial custody, the sources added.
