Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hits back on BJP for attack on her family
Star campaigner of the Congress Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today hit back at the BJP and said the personal attack on her husband Robert Vadra and her family would help her emerge stronger.
''My husband and family being maligned by the political opponents, is deplorable and this won't cow me down,'' she said while addressing a series of election meetings in support of her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi who is contesting Lok Sabha election from Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency.
Priyanka, reacting for the first time to the diatribe of BJP leaders, though without naming any one, said ''my grandmother had taught me not to cow down before such slur. Me and my family will emerge stronger out of this,'' she said.
Making a passionate appeal to the electorate, the Congress' star campaigner said it was ridiculous that the political adversaries were indulging in such personal attack while putting the basic issues like food, roads and development on backburner. ''It is now up to the public to look at it if such forces deserve to be in the power or not.,'' she pointed out.
Priyanka minced no words in firing a broadside at the BJP leaders. She said the language being used by them had taken the election campaigning to a new low. ''Congress party and its leaders are not used to such language and the BJP wants to avoid developmental issues,'' she said adding never before was such type of personal attack witnessed in campaigning.
She said the country had an illustrious past with the personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha enriching its rich traditions. ''Sadly, the opposition has shown departure from these traditions and launched a malafide campaign against my family,'' she added.
Reminding locals of her family's old relations with the Nehru-Gandhi family, Ms Vadra said the people had accepted her mother Sonia despite that she was born in Italy. ''I am not here to ask for votes for my mother because you people have been doing that for past so many years. I am here to strengthen my ties further,'' she said. The Congress had never made below the belt remarks against any body and the party was willing to take on the debate on basic national issues which unfortunately was missing from the campaign from the opposition. The Congress star campaigner was scheduled to address a series of meetings in the constituency of her mother starting from Harchandpur, Gangaganj followed by Gurubaksh Ganj, Nandakhera, Sultanpur Khera, Semahi, Khero and Sarai Mubarakpur and other places.
During campaigning, she interacted with locals and her car-cade was stopped at many places.
