Zimbabwean woman held with ephedrine
A 32-year-old Zimbabwean woman was apprehended at the international airport here yesterday with 25 kg of ephedrine, a banned substance commonly abused as a narcotic drug, valued at Rs 10 crore in international drug market.
She was taken into custody by the officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs and Central Excise Department when she was about to leave the country by Qatar Airways flight 507, official sources said here today.
The sources said the woman, identified as Elder of Johannesburg, was on a student visa and had been residing in New Delhi. Elder had flown down from New Delhi on Tuesday to catch her flight to Qatar and from there to South Africa.
The sources said as per the preliminary investigation, an anonymous person had handed over the drug to her at a lodge in Thampanoor. She had concealed the drugs in her check-in baggage. In the baggage screening, staff noticed suspicious small packets and further examined it.
It was one of the biggest drug hauls at the airport in recent times, the sources said.
