IPL opener: KKR beat Mumbai Indians
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) commenced their Indian Premier league (IPL) campaign in style by beating current champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by 41 runs in the opening match of the seventh edition of the cash-rich tournament here on Wednesday.
Posting 163 for five on the scoreboard, KKR bowlers, specially West Indian
Sunil Narine picked up four wickets, to restrict Mumbai Indians at 122 for seven in their 20 overs.
Morne Morkhel's also bowled tight for KKR and gave away 16 runs while picking a wicket in his four overs.
Shakib Al Hasan and Piyush Chawla, who played his first match for the KKR side, picked up a wicket.
Ambati Rayudu remained the top scorer for Mumbai Indians with his 48.
He was stumped out by Narine, two short of a fifty.
Skipper Rohit Sharma (27) and Aditya Tare (24) made some handy contributions but were not enough for their side to reach the target.
Earlier, riding on Jacques Kallis, who was adjudged the Man of the Match, for his 72, KKR posted 163 for five on the scoreboard. He smashed five boundaries and three sixes in the match.
Manish Pandey added 64 runs playing 53 balls. He hit six boundaries and two sixes in his knock.
Pandey and Kallis added 131 runs in the second wicket partnership which turned out to be crucial for the former champions.
Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga shined with the ball and picked up four wickets by giving away 23 runs in his four overs for Mumbai.
MI skipper Rohit Sharma said: "We need to learn from this game."
