A whopping sum of Rs 51.28 lakh was seized from the house of an ruling AIADMK functionary in Erode district of Tamil Nadu by the officials of the Election Commission.


Police said here today that acting on specific inputs, the authorities searched the house of AIADMK functionary Ashok Kumar and effected the seizure.

Since Ashok Kumar could not disclose from where he received such a huge amount and for what purpose, the EC officials seized and handed it over to the Income Tax department.

EC officials suspect that the amount might have been meant for distribution to the voters.

Acting tough, the EC has enhanced surveillance to prevent transportation of money and has also imposed certain curbs on the quantum of money to be carried by businessmen and others.

The EC officials have intensified vehicle checks and have seized several crores of unaccounted cash ever since the notification for the April 24 Lok Sabha polls was issued.
