Sonia to kickstart Cong campaign in Telangana
Even as the Telangana Congress leaders are hoping that Party President Sonia Gandhi's visit to Karimnagar today will swing the fortunes in their favour in the coming General Elections, for Ms Gandhi it will be a case of a promise fulfilled.
At the same venue - the sprawling Ambedkar Stadium - Ms Gandhi during her campaign trail way back in 2004 promised the people of the region that her party was in favour of carving out a separate Telangana state.
Her assurance then had evoked thunderous applause from a jam-packed stadium.
Ms Gandhi is scheduled to kickstart her party's campaign from the stadium at 1600 hrs today.
She will arrive at Begumpet Airport here and switch over to a chopper to fly to Karimnagar.
Telangana party leaders have spared no effort to make her meeting a roaring success with AICC secretary R C Khuntia personally supervising the arrangements.
The district and top police officials reviewed the security and other arrangements.
During her visit to Karimnagar, Ms Gandhi may also meet the kin of those who made the supreme sacrifice for the cause of
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee President Ponnala Laxmiah said the venue for the launch of the party's campaign in Telangana was strategically chosen because it was at the same place ten years ago that Ms Gandhi had committed to the creation of Telangana state.
All the 16 Lok Sabha candidates and over 70 Assembly nominees of the party will be attending the meeting for which the party was mobilising massive crowd to express the people's gratitude to Ms Gandhi for keeping her word on Telangana.
Unprecedented security arrangements were made at the venue of Ms Gandhi's election rally.
