ASSOCHAM seeks EC's clarifications on pending environment clearances
Apex industry body ASSOCHAM has urged the Election Commission to urgently provide all clarifications sought by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) vis-Ã -vis environment, forest, wildlife and other necessary clearances which have been pending since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) from March 5.
"All project proponents are facing a lot of difficulties owing to delay in grant of environment and forest clearances by the MoEF," said Secretary General of The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) D S Rawat in a communication addressed to Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, Assocham sources said here today.
"About a month ago, the Ministry had sought clarification from the EC regarding ongoing clearance processes under different statutes.
"However, the matter is still pending with the EC," said Mr Rawat. "Many of our members are facing a lot of problems."
The environment clearance, inter-alia includes appraisal of projects by the sectoral expert appraisal committees (EACs), which make appropriate recommendations to the ministry based on which it takes the decision about grant of NOC.
Similarly under the forest clearance process, cases are considered by the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) and based on its recommendations, the cases of forest clearances are decided by the ministry.
The standing committee of National Board of Wildlife considers the proposal, which requires wildlife clearance and makes recommendations, based on which decision is taken by the ministry.
All the aforesaid clearances are ongoing regulatory activities of MoEF, Mr Rawat maintained.
