30 held in connection with yesterday's clash
Police have arrested 30 persons in connection with the yesterday's clash between BJP men Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) over the election campaign at Mallipattinam near here.
BJP men, including party's nominee for Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency Karuppu Muruganandham, were canvasing for votes near a Mosque which was allegedly opposed by a group of SDPI men. This led to a wordy quarrel between both party men, which ended with free for all.
It was alleged that SDPI men threw stones and bottles at the BJP candidate in which 15 persons, including Karuppu Muruganandham were injured. They were treated at nearby hospitals.
However, police swung into action and resorted to a mild lathi charge. It disbursed the unruly mob and took the BJP candidate to a safer place.
During the riot, the wind screen glasses of a few cars of BJP men were damaged. Besides, the mob set on fire two huts and damaged 20 mechanised boats anchored at Mallipatinam fishing harbour.
To protest the incident, BJP and DMDK volunteers resorted to road roko agitation at Mannargudi near here, demanding immediate arrest of the SDPI men.
Meanwhile, an unruly mob damaged the glass doors of a private textile shop, while another mob damaged the television set of a foot wear shop at Mannargudi.
Police registered counter complaints and arrested 21 SDPI men and nine BJP men in connection with the yesterday's incident and were investigating.
To avoid further trouble, elaborate police bandobust and intensive patrolling was made in and around Mallipattinam area, police added.
