Tension prevailed for a while here as a police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disburse the clashing group of BJP and Social democratic Party of India (SDPI) activists at Mallipattinam near here today.

Police said trouble started when a group of BJP workers including party's nominee for Thanjavur Lok sabha Karuppu Muruganandham attempted to canvas for votes near a Mosque which was opposed by a group of SDPI workers, following this, there was a wordy quarrel between both party men, which ended with the free for all.

It was alleged the at SDPI men threw stones and bottles at the BJP candidate in which 15 persons were injured.

However police swung into action resorted mild lathi charge and disburse the unruly mob and rescued the BJP candidate to a safer place, and restored peace.

During the riot, the wind screen glasses of a few cars of BJP men were also damaged.

To avoid further, trouble eloborate police bandobust and intensive patrolling was made in and around Mallipattinam area, police added. The state goes to polls on April 24.
