A three-year-old boy was rescued from a 400-feet open borewell at Kuthalaperi village near Sankarankovil here today.

Official sources said a special rescue team from Madurai rushed to the spot with the latest equipment -- a robotic arm that was designed to rescue children from confined spaces such as borewells--and pulled out G.Harshan this evening.

A joint team comprising personnel of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department and police dug a parallel pit near the borewell with earth moving machines.

The child was trapped at a depth of 20 feet. As there was possible threat that the child may slip deeper into the borewell, the assistance of special team from Madurai was sought.

The expert team, using the robotic arm, pulled up the boy much to the jubilation of hundreds of people from surrounding hamlets, who thronged the spot to watch the rescue operation.

The boy in a conscious state and was rushed to the government hospital, here.

The condition of the boy is expected to improve as a team of doctors consisting of pediatricians was treating him.

The boy had fallen into the borewell while playing near it this morning.
