Tamilians ushered in the Tamil New Year today with traditional and religious fervour all over the state today.

The celebration began with people getting up early and offering worship in temples. Many performed poojas at home with their family priests. They then greeted relatives, friends and neighbours. The front portions of houses were decorated with colourful rangolis Mango leaf streamers adorned the door frames.

"Puthandu Vazthukkal" (New Year greetings) was the greeting exchanged with relatives and friends face to face, over phone and SMS mobile messagesis.

The Tamil New Year is celebrated on the first day of Tamil month of 'Chithirai', normally falling on April 13 or 14 every year.

In big temples in the state, the almanac for the New Year was read.
