Bharti should have resigned: Binny
Rebel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Vinod Kumar Binny on Friday said Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti should have resigned over his midnight raid controversy.
"The Law Minister should have resigned. I still don't know why the Chief Minister (AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal) took no action against him so far," said Binny.
Earlier the same day, Binny met Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi over the issue.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also protested against Bharti.
"The Delhi BJP was staging sit-ins at 14 places on Friday to press for the resignation of Somnath Bharti," reported CNN-IBN.
"Vijay Goel along with Arti Mehra and Vijay Malhotra held a dharna at Yusuf Sarai metro station and Dr Harshvardhan attacked the AAP at an agitation at Madhuban Chowk," said the news channel.
The AAP on Thursday defended Bharti and said there was no evidence to suggest that he made racist comments or misbehaved with African women during the controversial midnight raid that he conducted at a south Delhi locality last week.
Earlier in the evening, Bharti was summoned to a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee of the AAP, which is the party's highest decision-making body.
"Looking at the evidence, prima facie, we don't find anything procedurally wrong... Mr Bharti did not misuse his powers as a minister," AAP's chief spokesperson Yogendra Yadav said after the meeting.
This comes after another Ugandan woman has moved the court against Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti for allegedly misbehaving with her.
"... as another Ugandan woman has moved court seeking an FIR against men who misbehaved with her during the raid in the Khirki Extension area," reported CNN-IBN on Thursday.
"At the moment, she has not named Bharti, but if she identifies Bharti as one of the men who misbehaved with her, trouble may grow for him," said the news channel.
Meanwhile, a Congress delegation met lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday asking him to direct the police to take immediate action against the minister as he was "not above law of the land".
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Thursday threatened to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Bharti if he fails to appear before it by Friday.
However, Bharti said he has yet not received any summons from the DCW.
The AAP on Wednesday said it will take action against its leader Bharti if he is found guilty.
"Somnath Bharti is being made a political target. If he is found guilty, then AAP will take necessary action against him," said AAP spokesperson Ashutosh.
This came after the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday said Bharti should resign over his alleged misbehavior towards an Ugandian woman here.
"Somnath Bharti should resign. It is Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's duty to demand his resignation," said NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma.
"As of now, the Delhi Commission for Women is dealing with the case. Bharti has been summoned. After the State Commission submits its report, we will take up the case," she said.
Adding more troubles for the AAP, a Delhi court had earlier ordered the police to register an FIR based on a complaint by a Ugandan woman alleging that a group of people from a political party forcibly entered her house in south Delhi and molested her.
This comes after Bharti on Jan 15 night ordered a raid at a building in Khirki Extension in south Delhi.
Bharti has been accused of illegally detaining Ugandan women and forcing medical exams on them.
The court has reportedly asked Delhi Police to submit a report by Feb 14 on what action they have taken on her complaint.
Former Solicitor General Harish Salve will represent the women who have filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against 'unknown persons' in connection with the case.
