Congress let down small Coffee growers in Karnataka: Modi
BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi today said Congress government at the Centre over the several past decades had failed to project the country as a major Coffee producer and did little to make lives of small growers comfortable.
Speaking at a public rally in support of BJP candidate for Udupi-Chikmagalur segment Ms Shobha Karandlaje, he said the government could have done much by revolutioning the coffee cultivation and its commerce as India is known for production best variety of coffee.
But unscientific marketing and lack of value addition programmeshad left the small growers where they remained.
He came down heavily against the Congress for not doing enough for the people of coffee district despite it gave a political 'rebirth' to late prime minister Indira Gandhi.
"You elected late Indira Gandhi, but what has Congress did to help you over the past decades. But I promise you that if You elect BJP in the coming Lok Sabha polls, my party will not let you down. "What Gandhi could do, I will do 10 times more for the people of Chikmagalur and Karnataka," he said. Mr Modi also condemned union minister Jairam Ramesh, who hail from the district, of taking out a campaign world over that India was a 'poor' country.
