Bright sunshine greeted people today after night-long rain in the Kashmir valley where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest with minus 1.5 degree celsius minimum temperature.

There was no respite from the chill in the border town of Kargil where the minimum temperature dropped further and settled at minus 5.8 degree. However, more trouble is in store for the people of Jammu and Kashmir as a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), originating from Arabian sea, is likely to hit the region by April 16, a spokesperson of the Meteorological department said here this afternoon.

He said light to moderate rain or thundershowers would occur at a few places over the state during the next 24 hrs. There could be isolated thundersqualls in plains of Jammu division.

However, he said, during the subsequent two days, there could be decrease in precipitation and a fresh WD would affect the state by April 16.

After night-long rain, sun appeared today in the Kashmir valley, providing much-needed relief to the people.

The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded near normal minimum temperature after 19.2 mm rainfall, he said, adding that the maximum temperature has also improved today because of sunshine and dry weather. The maximum temperature in the city was 14.2 degree, six notches below normal yesterday when upper reaches had fresh snowfall and rain in plains.

He said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures will be below normal during the next 24 hours in Srinagar. Gulmarg, a ski resort in north Kashmir was coldest with minus 1.5 degree, more than two notches below normal. Pahalgam, a famed-health resort in south Kashmir recorded 0.6 degree night temperature, 1.5 degree below normal, he said. However, the minimum temperature at Qazigund, Kokernag and Kupwara was near normal.

Kargil, a border town in Ladakh region recorded minus 5.8 degree against yesterday's minus 5.2 degree, while at Leh, it was 0.7 degree against yesterday's 1.6 degree.

He said light rain would occur at Leh and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 11 degree and 0 degree during the next 24 hrs.
