In a no-holds-barred attack on the ruling Congress midway through the Lok Sabha elections, BJP today alleged that the party had ''locked its constitutionally elected president Sitaram Kesri in the bathroom'' to clear the way for Ms Sonia Gandhi to take over the job. Now such a party, should not talk about ''rajdharma'', it said.

The BJP was ridiculing the Congress praise for former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in an article put up on the AICC website in which the party wondered how a person whom the tallest leader of the BJP wanted to be removed for failing to perform his 'Rajdharma' during the 2002 Gujarat riots could be made its prime ministerial candidate.

Replying to a question on this, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said Ms Gandhi had called Mr Vajpayee a liar several times, and so this praise for him now was not convincing. It was just a ploy to get some cheap votes, she said.

She recalled the March 1998 incident when then Congress president Sitaram Kesri was allegedly kept locked in the bathroom by some Congress workers till Ms Gandhi's election as the party president was ratified at the CWC meeting.

The BJP spokesperson said such a party should not talk about ethical and moral propriety.
