BJP attacks Karunanidhi over his marriages after his Modi remarks
The BJP today hit out at DMK Chief M Karunanidhi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over their comments on its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's marital status, and asserted that the latter had never hidden any fact from the law and the nation.
''Mr Karunanidhi talking about marriage!'' was the sarcastic reaction of BJP Spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman hinting at the fact that the DMK Chief was having more than one wife.
Replying to questions on the issue at press conference here, she said Mr Modi had not mislead the nation by naming Jashodaben as his wife in his election nomination paper while having left this column blank in previous elections.
Because of reasons of respecting someone's privacy, he did not name her earlier, but had to do now due to provisions of the law, as the marriage was not legally null and void still, though they were not cohabiting, said Ms Sitharaman.
Mr Karunanidhi is reported to have said that a person who hid facts about his marital status was not fit for the prime minister's job.
The Congress has approached the Election Commission over Mr Modi's ''lie'' about marital status in the previous elections.
Ms Sitharaman said if the Congress vice-president that the attack on Mr Modi it was not surprising but coming from a leader of the stature of Karunanidhi, it was unexpected.
Ms Sitharaman also slammed the Samajwadi party Government for the FIR against BJP leader and its campaign in charge in Uttar Pradesh Amit Shah for his alleged hate speech in Muzaffarnagar hit recently by communal riots.
She said Mr Shah had been quoted out of context in the CD of his purported speech.
He had only asked people to use their vote as an instrument of getting justice, she said.
The BJP spokesperson expressed surprise that the SP government was doing nothing to rein in its leaders like Azam Khan who were making provocative speeches.
