Mary: second Transgender in AP Assembly Elections
Andhra Pradesh has set a record in registering 'others' (Transgenders) category as voters with almost 5100 having registered as voters with Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) for the Lok Sabha polls later this month.
The transgenders also plan to put up a candidate for the state assembly polls in Ms Domala Mary. She filed her nomination papers from the prestigious Khammam Assembly constituency as an Independent candidate.
Accompanied by her supporters, Mary, Director of Prabhatam Welfare Society, a town-based voluntary organization took out a procession and rally prior to submitting her nomination papers at the designated office of the returning officer in Khammam district town.
Khammam, the gateway to Seemandhra and the Chhattisgarh accounted for 3000 transgender voters officially and the unofficial estimates put the number to 25,000.
The state election officials had taken lead to enroll many transgenders as voters to give voice and representation to the growing generation and community .
Though I have any political background, ' I am in fray to become the voice of the marginalised people ,' says Mary who is a Commerce Graduate.
She expressed exodus that she will get support from poor and underprivileged people, who hold the key to determine the outcome of the elections.
Mary, who is leading an organisation to protect the rights of transgender, said her supporters from Warangal, Krishna and other neighboring districts were set to join her in the electioneering.
The State Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also nominated a transgenders, Shaik Sameera to contest from Jammalamadugu Assembly segment in Kadapa district.
