Narasarao pet Parliamentary constituency in Guntur district, a bastion for the Congress party since 1957, is going to witness a tough electoral battle between two senior leaders and industrialists, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao of the TDP and Ramki Infrastructure Company Chairman Alla Ayodhaya Rami Reddy of the YSRCP.

In an unexpected political development, Congress party senior leader Rayapati Samabasiva Rao, who was elected from Guntur to Lok Sabha for four times, quit the Congress and joined the TDP recently. He was fielded here by the TDP. The present MP of Telugu Desam Party, M Venugopala Reddy is now contesting Assembly seat.

Mr Sambasiva Rao, belonged to powerful Khamma community, while Reddy belonged to Reddy caste. the Both communities are equal in strength in the constituency. Narasarao Pet Loksabha constituency comprises seven assembly segments--Pedakurapadu, Chilakaluripet, Narasarao pet, Sattenapalli, Vinukonda Gurajala and Macherla. After bifurcation of the state, the political equations completely changed in the district. The Congress badly got damaged with the bifurcation affect while the TDP gained. Former Minister Mopidevi Venkataramana quit the Congress and joined the YSRCP and three MLAs in the district followed him. YSRCP candidate Ayodya Reddy is contesting first time in election.

The significance of the Narasarao Pet constituency is that three chief Ministers had been elected from the constituency and they were Kasu Brahmananda Reddy - 1977, 1980 and K Rosaiah in 1998 and Nedurumilli Janardhana Reddy in 1999. Since 1957, the TDP had won only three times in 1984, 1996 and 2009. The Congress party is in so pathetic state that it is yet to announce their candidates for Narasarao Pet and Guntur parliamentary constituencies.

TDP leader and former Home Minister Kodela Shiva Prasad, who is a powerful leader in the Narasarao pet constituency, wanted to contest from the constituency for Assembly. But because of seat-sharing with the BJP, the TDP shifted Mr Prasad to Sattenapalli Assembly segment, causing discontent among the cadre. However, Mr Sambasiva Rao has the needed muscle and money power and he is making all efforts to come back to Parliament.

YSRCP candidate Ayodya Reddy, despite a political novice, will get the support of people of Reddy caste, which dominates in four of the seven constituencies. YSRCP president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has already visited the district and addressed road side meetings. Now his mother Y S Vijayalakahsmi is visiting the constituencies.
