A more than century-old upper primary school was razed by unidentified assailants inviting strong protests by people in Kozhikode district of Kerala today.


Sources said 140-year-old Malapparamba-aided U P School, which served as a polling station for the Lok Sabha election yesterday, was brought down using JCB by a group of people last night.

Local people, who blocked the Wayanad-Kannur National Highway as a protest since this morning, said land mafia close to the school management were behind destruction.

Deploring the destruction Kozhikode Corporation Mayor Prof A K Premajam, who reached the site, said no reason was assigned for the action.

She said she had called up District Collector C A Latha to find the cause but she had not responded so far.

Sources said the management earlier had sought permission to close down the school stating that the school was not profitable.

Director of Public Instruction said a probe would be conducted into the incident.
