Five AIADMK men, including two former legislators, were injured and two cars torched in a clash between rival factions of the party during an election campaign at Thevarkulam locality, near Sankarankovil in this Southern district, today.

Police said the trouble began when the supporters of Former MLA R. Murugaiah Pandiyan attempted to board the campaign vehicle of AIADMK's Tenkasi (Reserved) Lok Sabha Constituency candidate Vasanthi Murugesan.

The supporters of sitting Sankarankovil MLA S.Muthuselvi attempted to push them away resulting in a free for all. Both the groups clashed with each other in the presence of AIADMK nominee, who was rendered helpless.

The public, watching the election campaign, ran helter-skelter. Police rushed to the spot and separated the warring groups. Due to the scuffle, Vasuki Murugesan abandonedd her election campaign in that area and left hurriedly.

Five people, including Murugaiah Pandiyan and another former MLA N Shanmugaiah Pandiyan were injured in the clash and all of them were treated at the government hospital at Sankarankovil. Police are investigating.
