Former Union Minister and Senior BJP leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal today demanded the Union government to withdraw Jnanapeeth Award from U R Ananthmurty for his alleged direct involvement in active politics.

Addressing a news conference here, he asked Mr Ananthmurthy to contest the election as independent candidate instead of campaigning in favour of one political party.

Mr Yatnal said Mr Ananthmurthy had been enjoying the coveted post as the Chancellor of Central University and he cannot campaign in favour of any political party.

He said the BJP has become inevitable to India for saving country from further ruin.

UPA government was responsible for the present state of affairs and a sense of insecurity had pervaded India and only BJP can save the country under present circumstances, he said.
