Trio convicted in bribery case
A Special CBI Court today convicted two Customs officials and an another person to one year rigorous imprisonment in a trap case filed by CBI.
The Anti Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai registered a case in 2007 against V Deivasuga and Manish Kanti Banik (A2), the then Examiner and Appraiser respectively of Customs Department at Import Container Terminal, Chennai Port Trust, Chennai based on the complaint that the duo demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 from the complainant for clearing the consignment of car accessories imported by the firm in which the complainant was an employee.
They instructed the complainant to hand over the bribe to K Chokalingam (A3) who was unauthorisely working as contingent employee in container yard of Chennai Port Trust.
CBI laid a trap in which Deivasuga, Manish Kanti Banik and Chokkalingam(A3), were caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000.
After investigation, the charge sheet was filed by CBI against the above accused under Sections 120 B IPC r/w 7 & 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) and u/s 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
On completion of trial, the trio were convicted and sentenced to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment of one year and a fine of Rs 3,000 was also imposed on each of them, a CBI release said here.
