55 out of 432 LS candidates in Karnataka have criminal background:
National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 1739 candidates out of 1761 candidates who are contesting in the Phase 5 of Lok Sabha 2014 Elections.
Out of the 121 segments coming under the fifth phase, there are a total of 279 candidates facing criminal charges that comes to 16 per cent of the total candidates, while 27 per cent of all the candidates are crorepathis. In Karnataka, out of 432 in the entire 28 segments, there are 55 candidates who face criminal charges. This include 30 candidates who face serious charges like attempt to murder and crime against woman, an ADR report said. The details of two other candidates could not be reviewed by the organisation. According to ADR state convener Harish Narasappa, out of the total number of candidates in Karnataka, 13 per cent of those have criminal background.
Out of 28 Congress candidates, six of them and out of the same number of BJP contestants nine of them and two out of 25 JD(S) candidates have criminal background, he said. Congress and the BJP shares the number of those who are facing serious criminal charges at four each.
Among those who are facing attempt to murder charges are BJP candidate from Bellary B Sriramulu and independent candidate from Dharwad Pramod Muthalik.
The state can boast of 118 candidates who are 'crorepathis' and among them, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, Congress candidate from Bangalore South is the richest in th country with Rs 7710 crore worth of assets as undertaken by him. The other rich candidates are R Prabhakar Reddy of JD(S) contesting from Bangalore Rural segment at Rs 224 crore and Aam Admi Party candidate from Bangalore central and former Infosys CFO V Balakrishnan at RS 189 crore.
Incidentally, four candidates are 'paupers' in the fray as they have declared that they had no assets to their credit. This include independent from Bidar Mirza Shafi Beig, BSP candidate from Bellary Ramudu, Basantappa Honnappa from Haveri and Manjunath contesting from Udupi-Chikmagalur.
When it comes to education, nearly half, that is 190 candidates have not passed beyond 12th standard while 217 of them are graduates or have highly educated. There are 21 women contestants.
