Three students, all teenagers who were practicing swimming, drowned in swirling waters and met a watery grave in irrigation canal near Penuguduru village under Karapa police station limits 16 kms from here around noon today.

Their bodies were retrieved a little away later in the evening.

Sub Divisional Police Officer R Vijayabhaskara Reddy, who reached the spot and made arrangements for tracing the bodies engaging the services of expert divers, told UNI that the mishap occurred when the rope tied to a tree for holding while practicing swimming, got snapped suddenly throwing all of them into the deep waters.

The names of the deceased were given as Mohammed Shaik Ishaq Vali (16) a student of ITI, Shaik Nizamuddin (17) studying polytechnic and Shaik Azam (16) who is appearing for 10th class public exams. All of them are residents of J.Ramaraopet in Jagannaickpur area here.

A case was registered and the bodies were shifted to government general hospital for postmortem pending further investigation, he added.
