Assuring that the genuine interests of the farmers and other inhabitants of the areas would be protected while implementing Kasturirangan Report on Western Ghats, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today made it clear that the Centre would ensure that agricultural and other development work in the hilly region of Kerala were not adversely affected.

Stating that the UPA government would continue to work for the well being of farmers, he said while addressing an election campaign for the Congress candidate and Union Minister of State for Food K V Thomas here, "I would urge you not to believe the false propaganda being made in respect of the implementation of the Kasturirangan Report."

Maintaining that the Western Ghats were a hot spot of bio diversity and there was need for its protection and preservation, as it was necessary for the country's sustainable development, he said, "We will decide on the recommendations of the Kasturirangan Report keeping in view the development needs of Kerala."
