RJD supremo Lalu Prasad today promised that his party would ensure that oppressed among Muslims and Christians could get Scheduled Caste status by amending section 341 of the Constitution and also executing the recommendations of Sachchar Committee for bringing qualitative change in the condition of Muslims,if voted to power at the Centre as partner of Congress in UPA.

Mr Prasad, after releasing manifesto of his party here, told mediapersons that oppressed sections in Muslims and Christians were living under pathetic conditions, deserving to be given Scheduled Castes status, so that they could get the facilities of reservations in government services and other benefits.

'Sachchar Committee had submitted its recommendations to the Union government long back, but its recommendations were yet to be implemented', Mr Prasad said adding that his party would ensure its execution for bringing qualitative change in the life of Muslims.

A special anti-riot battalion would be raised to protect the life and property of Muslims during communal violence, he further added.

"Our party would ensure reservation for poor among upper castes in government services while provisions would be strictly followed for reservation to backwards, extremely backwards, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes at appointment level and also in promotions', Mr Prasad said, adding that they would be given reservations in private sectors and judiciary as well.

Mr Prasad also advocated for special status to Bihar, saying that his party had been demanding it since long.Under the RJD regime, an unanimous resolution was passed by Bihar Assembly to this effect and was sent to the Centre, but the then NDA government did not take any action on the issue, he said, adding that the then Chief Minister Rabri Devi had also raised the issue before then prime minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee when he had arrived in Patna to address a public meeting, but that also did not yield any result,

"Special status is a genuine demand for Bihar and we will not rest till the demand is accepted by the Centre', he thundered.

Mr Prasad said the communal forces were posing serious threat to unity and integrity of the country and people should remain alert from such forces.

People would teach a befitting lesson to BJP-led communal forces in Lok Sabha elections, he added.

The state will go to polls on six phases on April 10, 17, 24, 30, May 7 and 12.
