The assets of key sitting Lok Sabha members, including 2G Spectrum scam accused and former Union Ministers Dayanidhi Maran and A Raja, have shown increase during the period 2009-14.

A perusal of the affidavits filed by them while filing their nomination papers, which ended today, revealed that Mr Maran, who is seeking a third term from Central Chennai constituency, increased his assets three fold, while Raja, seeking re-election from the Nilgiris (R) seat, has declared that his assets has grown marginally from Rs 70 lakh in 2009 to Rs 1.77 crore in 2014.

Mr Maran's assets has grown from Rs 3.66 crore in 2009 to Rs 10.94 crore in 2014, going by the affidavit submitted from him. But the asset of former Union Minister and former DMK parliamentary Party leader T R Baalu has increased from Rs 7.69 crores to a staggering Rs 20.15 crores. Mr Baalu, who had contested from Sriperumbudur in 2009 polls, is now contesting from Thanjavur seat.

Another DMK candidate and Party Spokesperson T K S Elangovan's assets went up from Rs 10.42 lakhs in 2009 to Rs 34.53 lakhs. Senior Congress leader and former Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, contesting from Mayiladuthurai, has disclosed that his assets, which stood at Rs 8.68 crores, has increased to Rs 11.68 crores.

While AIADMK candidate and Karur Lok Sabha seat nominee M Thambidurai showed that his assets went up to Rs 13 crore as against Rs nine crore in 2009, the assets of MDMK leader Vaiko, who had lost the Virudhunagar seat in 2009 and contesting from the same seat this time, has come down from Rs 2.68 crores in 2009 to Rs 1.36 crore now.

Mr Maran has disclosed movable assets of Rs Rs 2.59 crore in his name, Rs 1.77 crore in his wife Priya's name and Rs 3.53 crores and Rs 3.05 crores in the names of his children Divya and Karan, respectively. He has shares in Reliance Industries, Reliance Communications and Reliance Infrastructure. He also has gym and musical equipment worth Rs 27 lakh, while his wife has 1,745 grams of gold jewellery and silver articles to the tune of Rs 97.75 lakh.

If one goes by the affidavit, neither the 47-year-old Maran nor his spouse or children have any immovable assets, as disclosed during the 2009 polls. Former Telecom Minister and prime accused in 2G scam, A Raja has revealed that he owns movable property worth Rs 1.45 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 32.85 lakhs. The 50-year old DMK leader, who had served jail term in the case, has Rs 7,98 lakh in cash and his wife M A Parameswari Rs 34,786.

Mr Raja has listed 108 sovereigns of gold worth Rs 26.59 lakh among his movable properties and his wife 175 sovereigns worth Rs 43.08 lakh. Raja has declared that a criminal case filed against him in connection with the 2G scam is pending before a special court in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Mr Baalu disclosed a total asset of Rs 20.15 crore including those in the name of his two wives, which is nearly three times that of Rs 7.69 crore in 2009.
