The villagers of in and around Thambikottai Keelakadu in Tiruvarur District of Tamilnadu have been asked to vacate their village, following a L P G gas leak from a gas ladden tanker lorry capsized in to the Pamani river bed of the village, late last night.


Police said, the gas ladden lorry loaded with L P G gas at Narimanam oil refinery and on its way to Ilayankudi in Namakkal district of Tamilnadu, when the mishap occurred.

The lorry driver Vanchinathan who negotiated a curv in that area lost his control of the vehicle was said to be the reason behind the mishap, and he was admitted to Government hospital at Muthupet, police added. The villagers in and around Thambikottai Keelakadu who were vacated their villages gave shelter in a safer places near to their villages, police added and the vehicular traffic on Pattukkottai-Thiruthuraipoondi hav diverted.

Police rushed to the spot along with fire fighting vehicles from various fire stations.

Police also banned the use of match boxes and to lit the cooking stoves in and around one km range from the accident site, to avoid major fire mishap.

The fire and rescue department personnel continuously spraying the water on the tanker lorry to avoid any fire mishap, police said.

Police said two giant cranes brought from Tiruchirapalli is now on the rescue operation, to remove the tanker lorry from the river bed with all precautionary measures.

If the tanker was rescued without any damages to the tanker ladden with the gas, the tanker lorry was allowed to proceed further, or otherwise the gas will be loaded to an another tanker lorry with all precautionary measures, police added.
