Overweight of bride stands hurdle for marriage
A couple lodged a police complaint with Machavaram police station, here today, stating that the bridegroom, after fixing of the marriage, to be held on Mar 12, was expressing unwillingness to marry their daughter, saying that the bride is overweight.
The couple Pilla Ramu and P Varalakshmi said that they had fixed the marriage of their daughter P Sitaratnam with P Vikrama Naidu of Hyderabad. Two days ago, the bridegroom telephoned to their daughter and expressed his unwillingness to marry her, saying she was too fat.
However, the family members of the boy put a condition that if they pay Rs.5 lakh more dowry, he could marry her. Meanwhile, the parents of the bride, who had made all the arrangements for the marriage, lodged a compliant with the police. The parents went to the Machavaram police station to explain the injustice along with CPI city secretary Donepudi Shankar. But the Sub-inspector, Ramesh Babu abused him. The angered family members squatted in front of the police station and staged a dharna.
Knowing the incident, ACP Lavanya Lakshmi and other police officials rushed there and pacified the agitating people. The parents talking to media, said that they had booked a function hall by paying advance Rs 5.25 lakh and gold jewelry worth lakhs of rupees, were given to the bridegroom. Now the bridegroom saying that he would marry her, if she became slim. The CPI leader alleged that the police were backing the bridegroom.
