In all, there are 21 women candidates contesting in the April 17 election to the Lok Sabha in Karnataka.

In 2009 Parliament Election, there were 18 women candidates and only J Shantha, sister of BJP leader B Sriramulu, made it to Parliament by winning the Bellary (Reserved) Lok Sabha seat on BJP ticket.

There are 434 candidates in the fray for 28 seats.

Of the 21 women candidates, 11 are from National and State level parties. Congress and BSP have fielded two candidates each, BJP one, JD(S) and Aam Aadmi Party three each.

Present Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva had unsuccessfully contested in 2009 election on Congress ticket from Uttara Kannada while TV Journalist-turned-politician Tejasvini Gowda (also Congress) tasted defeat from Bangalore Rural in the same election.
