Sri Lankan bowlers bowled tight in the last few overs to help the side defeat South Africa by five runs in the World T20 Group stage match here on Saturday.

Posting 165 for seven on the scoreboard, Sri Lanka restricted the African side to 160 for eight in their 20 overs.

Kusal Perera smashed a 40-ball 61 and Angelo Mathews' 43 later helped Sri Lanka post the competitive total on the scoreboard.

South Africa, however, gave early jolt to Sri Lanka by picking up Tillakaratne Dilshan (0) in the first over as Dale Steyn bowled him. The scorecard read 17 for one.

Mahela Jayawardene soon departed by contributing only nine runs with his willow.

Kumar Sangakkara (14) joined Perera and added 41 runs in the third wicket partnership to pull out the team from the situation.

Sri Lanka posted 165 for seven on the scorecard in their 20 overs.

Imran Tahir picked up three wickets while Stayn and Morne Morkel took two for Sri Lanka.

South Africa lost wickets regularly while chasing 166.

JP Duminy contributed 39 runs with his willow and remained the top scorer for South Africa.

He hit three boundaries and two sixes in his knock.

Albie Morkel smashed two huge sixes in his four balls to give some hope to the side.

Ajantha Mendis scalped his wicket to end all dreams for the South African side Morne Morkel (0) and Imran Tahir (8*) remained not out till the end. Tahir smashed one six in the last ball of the innings.
