As a result of infighting, Congress MP from Uttarakhand's Garhwal, Satpal Maharaj, on Friday resigned from the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He reportedly has support of five MLAs in the state.

Welcoming him in the BJP, party chief Rajnath Singh said: "Satpal Maharaj is joining us today. He will strengthen our party."

Earlier in February, Satpal openly criticised Harish Rawat's elevation as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

In March, Satpal said he has decided not to contest the Lok Sabha elections and blamed Harish Rawat, saying it was he who forced him to take the extreme step.
