Dec 16 gangrape: High Court upholds death penalty

New Delhi, Mar 13 : The Delhi High Court on Thursday upheld death penalty for all four convicts in the Delhi gangrape case.

"The prosecution moved HC for a confirmation of the death penalty soon after the trial court order in September 2013," reported CNN-IBN.

The convicts - Mukesh (26), Akshay Thakur (28), Pawan Gupta (19) and Vinay Sharma (20) - had moved the High Court claiming their innocence.

On Dec 16, 2012, six people gangraped and brutalised the 23-year-old Delhi Braveheart or Nirbhaya with an iron rod on a moving bus in New Delhi. The victim succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital on Dec 29.

The incident triggered nationwide outrage against rising cases of crime against women in India with people pouring into the streets of New Delhifor days and demanding a change of law and strict punishment of the accused.
