In a huge blow to the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, its leader Bhagirath Prasad, a retired IAS officer, on Sunday left the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

This comes after his name was included in the Congress's first list of candidate on Saturday.

He was declared the Congress candidate from Bhind constituency in Madhya Pradesh.

"I am impressed by the BJP government's governance and its commitment to the uplift of the poor," Prasad told reporters justifying his sudden switch.

He had contested from Bhind in 2009 elections also, but had lost.
