Bharti surrenders Bar Council license
With the Delhi Bar Council threatened to take action against him, Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti on Saturday surrendered his Bar Council license.
As per the rule, Bharti was required to surrender his Bar Council license immediately after taking charge as a minister.
Delhi Bar Council Secretary Advocate Murari Tiwari said they will meet on Jan 20 and discuss the evidence tampering allegations against Bharti.
On Jan 14, Bhart rejected allegations that he had tampered with the evidence in a case which he was handling as a lawyer even as the Congress attacked him over the issue.
Denying the allegations, Bharti told media: "This is absolutely a lie."
Attacking Bharti, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge for Delhi Shakeel Ahmed tweeted: "Time for Mr Kejriwal to walk the talk. Delhi's Law Minister was indicted by a court for illegally helping an accused of corruption."
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, however, stood by the side of his party leader and said he did not tamper with evidence.
"He (Somnath Bharti) was trying to save a junior level officer," Kejriwal told media.
"I want to say that we are ready to give the recording and then media can show it to people and then you all can seen and tell where has the tampering been done..This is wrong case," he said.
Bharti was once indicted for tampering with evidence by a Patiala house court in connection with a case in which he had appeared as a lawyer, media reports said.
"Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti's track record as a successful lawyer involves an indictment for "tampering with evidence" by a Patiala house court," The Times of India reported.
"This has emerged from an order passed by then CBI Special Judge Poonam A Bamba in August last year when she hauled up Bharti and his client Pawan Kumar - facing prosecution on corruption charges - after the CBI accused them of influencing a prosecution witness by speaking to him on phone and discussing the case," the newspaper reported.
