Gas leak in navy destroyer ship kills one
After the mishap inside the INS Sindhuratna which left two sailors dead, another naval officer was killed on Friday in a gas leak on board India's most advanced destroyer ship, the INS Kolkata, while the vessel is under construction at Mumbai's Mazgaon dockyard, reports said.
The officer, Commander Kuntal Wadhwa, died after a malfunction in the ship's carbon dioxide unit, which caused gas to leak during machinery trials.
INS Kolkata is still under construction at Mumbai's Mazgaon dockyard and was due to be commissioned this month.
The warship is one of the most advanced vessels made in India and is fitted with state of the art weaponry and sensors.
This comes after at least two sailors died and seven other Navy personnel were injured in a mishap inside the INS Sindhuratna, a Kilo-class submarine, off the Mumbai coast on Feb 26.
INS Sindhuratna (S59) is a Sindhughosh-class diesel-electric submarine of the Indian Navy.
In August last year, at least 18 Navy personnel were killed in a fire onboard INS Sindhurakshak submarine that sank after an explosion.
