By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Jan 18 : Bodo militants allegedly gunned down at least five people belonging to Bihar in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Friday night, police said on Saturday.
IK Sangbijit led National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants killed five people at Athiabari near Ramfilbeel under Sidli police station in Kokrajhar district along National Highway 31 around 9-30 pm on Friday.
The militants fired indiscriminately at passengers of a night service bus proceeding from Siliguri in West Bengal to Jonai Silapathar in Lakhimpur district of Assam.
Two passengers were critically injured in the attack and they were admitted to Bongaigaon civil hospital.
"A six-member armed group fired indiscriminately at some passengers with sophisticated weapons and killed five of them," Dr LR Bisnoi, IGP of BTAD said.
Top police and army officials rushed to the area and launched an operation against the militants at suspected areas.
The police said they suspect the incident could be retaliation by the Bodo militants for another incident on Friday as a militant of the anti-talk faction group of NDFB was killed in an encounter with security forces in the lower Assam district.
Security forces gunned down a NDFB (S) militant named Raja Basumutary on Friday and recovered one pistol, several rounds of ammunition from his possession.
