New Delhi, Mar 3 : Marking an end to a six-year-long legal battle, veteran Congress leader ND Tiwari has reportedly accepted Rohit Shekhar as his son, said reports on Monday.

According to reports, the 88-year-old politician invited Shekhar to his house here on Sunday and told him he is tired of fighting and that the latter is indeed his son.

"I have accepted that Rohit Shekhar is my son. The DNA test also proved he is my biological son," Tiwari told NDTV.

Shekhar said he is happy with Tiwari's acknowledgement and hopes he does not get cheated again.

"He said that you are my son and that we are together now. I felt very good. I just hope that I'm not cheated now," Shekhar told CNN-IBN.

"It's an emotional moment for me. Both Rohit and I have struggled a lot," Shekhar's mother Ujjwala told the news channel.

Shekhar had filed a paternity suit against Tiwari in 2008.

In 2012, in a major blow to Tiwari, his DNA test results revealed that he is the biological father of Shekhar.

The Delhi High Court had announced the details of the DNA test report.

"ND Tiwari and Ujjwala Sharma are the biological father and mother of Rohit Shekhar," the court had said while stating the details of Tiwari's DNA test report.

Shekhar claimed he was Tiwari's son born to Congress activist Ujjwala and wanted a declaration to that effect.

Shekhar had claimed that Tiwari began neglecting him and his mother after 1995 and refused to meet him after becoming the Uttaranchal chief minister. He wanted a DNA test to confirm that Tiwari is his biological father.

Tiwari is no stranger to controversy surrounding his personal life.

Tiwari's five-decade-old political career came to a virtual end after a news channel in 2009 showed clippings of an elderly man purported to beTiwari in bed with three young women in the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad.

A few days later, Tiwari resigned as the Andhra Pradesh governor citing health grounds.
