Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bangaru Laxman on Saturday died after a prolonged illness.

Laxman, 74, was admitted to Hyderabad's Yashoda Hospital and had been unwell for quite some time.

He was the BJP President from year 2000-2001. He was also served as the Railway Minster from 1999-2000.

Laxman had quit from the post of president in the BJP after a sting operation conducted by the Tehelka Magazine showed him accepting bribe of Rs one lakh from a fake arms dealer to recommend to the Defence Ministry and to award them a contract to supply thermal binoculars to the Army.

He was later convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act by the CBI and was sentenced to four years in jail.
