Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the country is witnessing an 'opinion poll scam' ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Kejriwal made the remarks a day after sting operation by a news channel claimed that some of the opinion poll agencies are willing to twist their findings for monetary considerations.

"Yesterday, a news channel named News Express reveled a huge scam going on the in nation in the form of opinion polls. We told it earlier and the sting operation conducted by a news channel proved it right," Kejriwal said while addressing a press conference here.

"Our country is witnessing opinion poll scam," he said.

"Assuming that the footage aired by the news channel is authentic, it represents a dark hour for the Indian media," he said.

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over the issue of opinion polls, the former Delhi CM said: "We want to know from Modiji and the BJP that how much money they have given to various opinion poll agencies."

He said the Election Commission should institute a code of conduct and a regulatory authority for the conduct of opinion polls.

Kejriwal said: "The News Broadcasters Standards Authority and the Editors' Guild should, having checked the veracity of this sting, conduct an inquiry into the role of news channels in broadcasting manipulated polls."

Demanding steps to be taken in connection with the matter, the AAP supremo said: "A criminal investigation should be carried out by an SIT, preferably under Supreme Court, to verify all the allegations contained in this sting and get to the bottom of this political conspiracy regarding the role of political parties in manipulating the findings of opinion polls in the recent past."
