Not questioning Modi's sexuality: Salman Khurshid
External Affairs Minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Wednesday defended his "impotent" remark on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
"I am not questioning Modi's sexuality. We often use the word 'impotent' in Hindi and English. In fact, I have borrowed the word from media channels. When someone fails to do something, he is called impotent," Khurshid said.
Khurshid has started a political storm by calling Modi an 'impotent' man.
Targetting Modi over the 2002 Gujarat riots, Khurshid said: "I want to ask only one question - you (Modi) claim to be such a strong and powerful man and wish to be the PM, but you could not protect the people of Godhra?"
"Some people came, attacked and went away, and you just did nothing. We are not accusing you of killing people. Hamara aarop hai ki tum napunsak ho. (Our accusation is that you are impotent). You couldn't stop the killers," Khurshid said at a rally at his Lok Sabha constituency Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was quick to react to Khurshid's statement and warned him not to use such words against opposition leaders.
"When politicians speak with hatred, it is going to harm you," Gandhi said in an interaction at a school in Guwahati city of Assam.
However, BJP did not let go the Congress so easily as the main opposition party of India demanded an explanation from Rahul.
"Rahul Gandhi must answer if this is how he has trained his Congress spokespersons," BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain told media.
"It is regrettable and shameful. Is this how the foreign minister of India speaks? Khurshid must apologize," said senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad.
"Khurshid has lost his mental balance," said BJP leader Yatin Oza.
