Four militants killed in Assam encounter

By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Feb 21 : At least four militants, including three Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres, were killed in two separate encounters with security forces in Assam on Thursday, police said on Friday. Three hardcore militants of GNLA were killed in an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district along the Assam-Meghalaya border late Thursday. Following a tip-off, a joint team of police and army launched an operation against the Garo militants at Kachumari hills area near Krishnai in the West Assam district along the Assam-Meghalaya border. "Based on intelligence report, we were informed about the presence of militants at the remote area and launched an operation. When security personnel reached the area, the militants fired at us and forced us to exchange bullets, in which three militants were killed," Goalpara district SP Nitul Gogoi said. At least two militants of the outfit managed to flee from the area with the help of darkness. Security forces recovered three 7.65 pistols, magazines, grenades and ammunition from the slain militants. The deceased militants are yet to be identified. Top police and army officials rushed to the bordering area and launched an operation against the militant group. In a separate incident, a hardcore militant of anti-talk faction group of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) was killed in a gun-fight with security forces at Multijhora area of Kokrajhar district on Thursday. Security forces recovered a 7.65 pistol and ammunition from his possession.
