"Delhi Police is competent enough"
After being attacked by Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal over the increase in crimes against women in the national capital, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi on Thursday said the force is "competent enough" to ensure the safety of Delhiites.
"The Delhi police is competent enough to protect the Delhi people...I want to assure the people of the city that Delhi police is taking required steps for your safety," Bassi told mediapersons.
This comes after Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday blamed the Delhi Police for the increase in crimes against women and called it "a highly compromised force".
"The Delhi Police is a highly compromised force...They have to be more accountable, else crimes will not be curbed," said Kejriwal at a press conference here.
He said the Delhi government is warning the police to suspend the offending Station House Officers (SHO)s.
"We are demanding and in fact we are warning the Delhi Police to suspend the offending SHO's (station house officers) immediately," the Delhi CM said.
He demanded the suspension of the SHO of the Sagarpur and Malviya Nagar police stations and two assistant commissioners of police.
According to Kejriwal, the Sagarpur SHO did not arrest members of a family who allegedly set their daughter-in-law on fire.
While, the SHO of Malviya Nagar is accused of complicity with a bunch of foreigners in south Delhi allegedly involved in prostitution and drugs.
"If the suspensions are not done, then neither the government nor the Delhi people will remain a mute spectator," said Kejriwal.
He also called negligence on the part of the police in two separate crime-related complaints raised by AAP ministers Rakhi Birla and Somnath Bharti.
Rakhi Birla, who looks after women's affairs, has also accused policemen of shielding people who had allegedly attempted a murder for dowry.
"Incident last night with Somnath Bharti shows how police is operating," Kejriwal said referring to the refusal of the Delhi Police to raid the Khirki village area, where Bharti has alleged that Nigerian nationals are involved in prostitution and drug trafficking .
Kejriwal said that he will meet Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and the Delhi Police Commissioner for Friday morning to bring up the issue of negligence.
He said there is a drug and sex racket going on which have led to the tendencies of rapes.
"Drug and sex rackets going on... the minister demands action... we are not investigating but want the police to take action," demanded the AAP supremo.
He also said the people of Delhi are "unhappy with the police's performance."
