Manish Tewari backs Rahul for PM post
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Thursday backed Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi as the party's prime ministerial candidate.
"I think Rahul is the natural leader of the Congress. There is a certain amount of inevitability in fighting the election under his leadership. We should wait for the outcome of his decision," Tewari told CNN-IBN.
Earlier on Thursday, Union Minister of State for Power Jyotiraditya Scindia said the entire country needs the leadership of Rahul.
"Not just the party, the whole country needs Rahul Gandhi, who is young, dynamic and committed to the welfare of the country," said Scindia.
He said he wants Rahul to be named as the Congress' prime ministerial candidate.
"I certainly hope Rahul Gandhi is declared the PM candidate of the party," said Scindia.
As the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is set to meet here on Thursday, media reports said that Rahul might to made its working president.
According to reports, the CWC will meet to approve a resolution on whether Rahul can be made the Congress working president.
"Sources say the Congress may not decide on making Rahul Gandhi the Prime Ministerial candidate but the final call rests with Congress President Sonia Gandhi," reported CNN-IBN.
Rahul has said in an interview that he is not shying away from the any responsibility indicating that he is prepared to be the PM nominee of the Congress.
In an interview to Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar, he said he will take up whatever responsibility is given to him by the party and do it to the best of his ability.
"We are a democratic organisation. We believe in democracy. The people of this country will decide who will be their next prime minister. ... whatever responsibility the party has given me, or will give me in future, I will take that," said the Gandhi scion.
He said if his party returns to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, it will be good for the country.
"For the country's good, it is important for the Congress to return to power."
The 43-year-old Congress leader also ruled out that his sister Priyanka Gandhi can be in active electoral politics.
Rahul has been pitted against BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in the media but the Congress leader has so far not expressed in clear terms that he is willing to be a challenger of Modi.
