Mathematics a pure science: C R Rao

Dharwad, Jan 10 : World renowned mathematician Dr C R Rao today underscored the significance of mathematics terming it as the purest science and even the technologists have come to realise its importance in national development.

Inaugurating a one-day workshop on ''Mathematics and Statistics Education in India'' as a part of the academic activities of the Pavate Institute of Mathematical Sciences(PIMS) here, Dr Rao pointed out that time has come to revive the glory of India in the field of mathematics.

''As Indians we should feel proud about the contributions we have made numeral system. Our contributions were highly original.

But unfortunately the momentum was lost as we were invaded by outsiders. Only in 1940s attempts were made to set up research and training institutes for the advancement of science and statistics,'' he said.

Recalling the genius of Ramanujam, Dr Rao noted that he wrote over 4500 theorems. Each one is a new. He wrote almost one theorem per day and created record, he added.

Dr Rao appreciated the efforts made by Karnataka University in setting up Pavate Mathematical Sciences which would play a significant role in the years to come. He congratulated Vice Chancellor Dr H B Walikar for his keen interest in reviving the glory of mathematical science. Dr Patil Puttappa who headed the committee to set up the institute commended the University for establishing such an institute.

In his presidential remarks Dr. H B Walikar Vice Chancellor noted that the institute would have holistic approach to the study and research in areas of mathematics, statistics and computer science.

"We would approach the state government to fund the institute.

PIMS is a fitting tribute to the mathematics genius and greatest educationist Dr. Pavate", he remarked.

Dr A S Kadi Chairman Department of Statistics welcomed and Dr. S B Hinchigeri Registrar proposed a vote of thanks. Over 200 teachers of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer science attended the one day workshop. (UNI)
